Fun Activities for You and Your Friends!
Are you hanging out with your friends, but you're bored out of your minds? Well here are some ideas
on things you can do with small groups of people. I'll update this page as I come up with more things.
LUCKY
- Min. Recommended # of People: 4
- Type: Card Game
- Cost: A Deck of Playing Cards
Lucky is a shitty card game I made when I was in high school. All of my friends hated it. Here's
how you play!
Setup: Take a deck of cards. Shuffle it and do your best not to look at the cards. Distribute the deck
evenly among all players. If it ends up that the cards do not distribute evenly, just do the best
you can. Players can look at the cards in their own hand, but should NOT share with the person next to them.
Once cards have been distributed, have players sit in a circle (or triangle, or square) and
pick which direction you'll be playing in (clockwise or counterclockwise). After direction has been decided,
gameplay can begin.
Gameplay: The goal of the game is to collect all four suites of one number/face. Once one player has collected
all four cards, the cards are removed from their hand and placed in a stack on the surface in front of them. Each stack is worth one point.
Thus, before gameplay can truly begin, players must ream through their decks and remove any groups of four they may have
accidentally been handed during card distribution. These still count as points by the way~
The gameplay is defined by two roles: Stealing and Losing. The game begins with the first Stealing, so choose one player to be
the first Stealer. The Stealer turns to the person next to them (The Loser) (based on direction), and The Loser must fan out all of their cards,
making sure that The Stealer cannot see any of the values on the cards and can only see the backs. The Stealer then
steals ONE card from The Loser and adds it to their hand. The Loser then becomes The Stealer and turns to the person next to them,
and that person becomes the new Loser.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the nature of the game, it may or may not evenly end in a satisfying way. You will likely reach
a point where you and the other players only have 2 or 3 cards in your hands and thus cannot hold enough cards to make a pile. Where & how you
proceed from that point is up to you! But understand, the player with the most points/stacks at the end is the winner!
Rules:
- First and foremost, this is a LUCK BASED GAME! If anything feels unfair, that's because IT IS BY DESIGN!
- Once the direction has been chosen, it CANNOT be changed! This means if a card you need is stolen from you,
you have to wait for it to go ALL THE WAY AROUND the group before you get the CHANCE to steal it back!
- The Loser CANNOT block a steal in any way! The Loser can 'offer' specific cards in their hand by sticking
them out in the fan, but The Stealer gets the final say!
- Relatedly, The Loser CAN show a specific card in their hand to taunt The Stealer and prove they have it,
but it must be shuffled fairly back into their hand before The Stealer can Steal.
- The Stealer CANNOT attempt to look at The Loser's hand when Stealing! It MUST be a blind pull! Any doubt
that the Steal was blind can be challenged and a do-over can be forced.
- Cards cannot be traded in any way, in any direction, between any players!
- Dirty tricks like facial expressions during Stealings, lying about the cards in your hand, reverse
psychology tactics, and other imaginable schemes are all allowed. However...
- When a group of four cards is removed from your hand and declared as a point, the four cards must be
shown to the rest of the players to prove that it's a fair point!
Tips and Tricks:
- This is a very fast paced and active game where your goals and desired cards will change right before your eyes.
You might lose your entire collection of Queens just as fast as you steal a collection of 5's. Always pay
attention to the cards you Steal and Lose to see which direction your goals change in.
- Keep your hand organized in some way so that you're quickly able to see what your totals are.
- Ultimately, this is also a game of trusting and lying. Lying by offering cards you know they need (or don't need)
and choosing to trust or not trust cards that are offered to you.
Optional Ideas for Spicing it Up:
- When the point is reached where players don't have enough cards in their hands to make a group of four, kick out the players
with the least amount of points and redistribute their cards among surviving players. Break ties with Rock Paper Scissors.
- Remove the requirement to show the other players a stack of four before removing it from your hand, but make sure it's
still placed face up in front of you. This then puts the onus on the other players to catch someone in their lie...!
Perhaps, once a lie has been caught, the cards are redistributed among the group instead of going straight back into the liar's hand!
- Integrate the deck's Joker(s) and Rules Card into play (given that they blend in with the rest). Make a list of bullshit
disruptive crap like "all remaining cards in play must be surrendered, reshuffled, and redistributed" or "direction is reversed"
When the Joker or Rules Card is Stolen, generate a random number (or roll a die or something) to pick a random thing off the list
and do whatever it says.
- Trades are now legal but only between players who are not adjacent to each other and would otherwise never directly interact
with each other. Trades can be blind or open.
COLOR SHOPPING CHALLENGE
- Min. Recommended # of People: 3
- Type: Food Challenge
- Cost: $5-$20 per Person
I really need a better name for this one. I'm also sure I'm not the first person to do this, so don't credit me as
the inventor. This is just something I like to do for fun with my friends.
Setup: Write the names of different colors on different note cards/pieces of paper/post it notes. Fold them
up and place them in a bucket/hat/basket/bag/whatever. Have everyone get in the car and drive to a food-selling
store of your choice. This can be a gas station, convenience store, grocery store, mall, whatever as long as it sells
packaged food. Finally, have everyone draw a card from the hat. DON'T SHARE YOUR COLOR!
Commencement: Send people into the store one at a time, and give them 5 to 10 minutes to find and purchase
three things: a SWEET SNACK, a SALTY SNACK, and a DRINKY that all match their color. You your group can
place different restrictions based on what your comfort levels are, for example, no alcohol or energy drinks.
As for what 'matches' a color, as long as it can be argued that it represents the color well, it works. But personally,
we tend to go based on packaging more than the product itself.
Once a person has purchased their trio, have them return to the car. Make sure items are bagged and not visible to other players!
After everyone has purchased their goodies and everyone has returned to the car, trade bags with other people in the car, making sure
that nobody ends up with the bag they originally bought. Finally, with a new bag of goodies in everyone's hands, go around
and open your present, and show off to everyone what you ended up with.
Traditionally, the challenge ends with everyone eating what they got, and sharing between the group, especially when it comes to
snacks that nobody has ever tried before.
Tips and Tricks:
- Get creative! A red salty snack could just be a bag of nacho Doritos... or it could be a bag of pastrami.
- Relatedly, think about what each color could represent beyond its traditional flavors. Orange can be... orange. But
it could also be honey! Or peanut butter!
- Consider creating a budget, maybe try to stay around a certain total dollar value so everyone gets the same money's worth.
Optional Ideas for Spicing it Up:
- Instead of buying snacks, have people buy ingredients, and in the end, have everyone come together to make a dish or group of dishes
with the things you all bought. Maybe assign each person either entree, appetizer, or dessert to make it easier. Then have a potluck!
- Try making the most horrific combination you could possibly imagine, or push the bounds of what it means to be a 'snack' or 'drink'.
- Go to a specialty store like a store that specializes in world foods or foods from a certain country so you're all forced to try new things.
- Go somewhere that has a lot of variety so your options feel endless, or go somewhere super small and confined so you have limited options.
- Instead of 'sweet' or 'salty', replace one or both with other flavors like spicy, sour, or bitter. Feel free to replace 'drink' with
another type of snack, or omit/add a category entirely.
- As a group, define who you're shopping for before anybody buys anything. This can be used for good or evil, and might be necessary if someone has
an allergy or dietary restriction.
CONCOCTION aka BARTENDER
- Min. Recommended # of People: 2
- Type: Food Challenge
- Cost: $3-$6 per Person
This one is similar in concept to Color Shopping, but it's great if you have a smaller budget and/or less people. At the same time, it might be harder to pull off...
Setup: Get everybody in the car and drive to your local gas station, or any place that has self serve drink machines.
Commencement: Send people in one by one to make their concoctions. To make a concoction, grab a medium or large size fountain drink
and mix different liquids until you're satisfied with your creation. Then, return to the car and send the next person in. After everyone
has created their drink, return home and give everyone a new, clean, separate cup. One by one, introduce your drink, describe your inspiration, and
split it evenly among all participants. Everyone must try it, but you don't have to finish it if you don't want to. Make sure everyone gets the
chance to share their drink.
Tips and Tricks:
- Get creative! Go beyond the limits of the fountain machine and use things like Slurpees, coffee, slushies, tea syrups, condiments, or even buy
separate things from the bottled/canned drinks section to dump in like milk, energy drinks, or alcohol.
- Hell, buy one of those nasty little energy shots or bag of candy and use it as a mix in. Just be warned, this might increase how much you spend,
and you might not be allowed to mix your concoction in store (especially before purchasing), meaning you'll have to do it in the car or back at the house.
- To avoid suspicion from workers who may be inclined to stop what you're doing or kick you out, stay quiet, keep a low profile, and clean up your mess.
If push comes to shove, offer to pay extra for your drink, as some places might charge differently for different drinks.
Optional Ideas for Spicing it Up:
- Assign people different flavor profiles before sending them in. Have people pick or give them randomly. This could be as simple as 'sour' or as
complex as 'spiced chocolate cherry'. You can further add on to this by grading people based on how well they met their profile.
- Have everyone go in at the same time to get inspiration from each other in the moment. Just make sure not to make too much of a ruckus!
- Require purchasing a candy mix in or prepackaged drink of some kind in order to further intensify creation.
- Discuss with your group whether you wanna aim for drinks that are actually drinkable or if you want to compete to see who can make the most
disgusting creation of all time.
- Create recipe cards so that you can make them again in the future, or just to have something cute to hang on your wall as a memory.
- Have a palatte cleanser of water or ginger or something so everyone gets a fresh start when trying a new drink.
- Force everyone to drink the entire cup that they get poured every time.
- At the end, combine all the drinks into one giant cup or pitcher, mix it, and then taste again.
